The Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) will once again stage the prestigious CARICOM Classic Team Championship from June 30th to July 7th, with an U-16 tournament set to be staged simultaneously at the Pegasus Suites and Corporate Centre.
This was disclosed by a press statement from the local governing entity. According to the correspondence, the event which is a collaboration between the GCF and the CARICOM Secretariat, will be contested in a nine-round Classical Swiss format. Each team will be vying for a place in the top three positions.
The release stated, “The U-16 chess competition promises to have a host of young Guyanese players who will get a chance to shine and compete among other players their age.

The GCF, in its aim to promote chess in Guyana and the Caribbean region, hosted the first instalment of the CARICOM Classic Chess tournament in 2024 to coincide with CARICOM’s 50th anniversary, attracting participants from Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Jamaica, Dominica, St. Lucia, the Bahamas, and the Cayman Islands.”
Trinidad and Tobago are the defending champions, while Guyana and Barbados rounded out the top three in that order.
According to the release, the federation’s objective is to establish the tournament as a biennial event, strategically positioning it between Chess Olympiads.
The next edition of the event is penciled 2027, one year after the scheduled Chess Olympiad.
