Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo earlier this week met with some truck drivers who have been complaining about unfair competition in the construction supply sector and told them that their concerns will be addressed.

Addressing the issue at his weekly press conference on Thursday, the Vice President assured the truckers that their complaints are being taken seriously and promised to follow up with concrete actions in the coming weeks. Some of the complaints are claims of them being pushed out of the market by Chinese-linked operators. “We had a good discussion,” Jagdeo said. “I committed to them that I will work on finding a solution. It’s not something that will happen overnight, but we’re looking at it carefully.”

Jagdeo explained that no Chinese company has been granted exclusive rights to quarry operations and that all licences have been issued to Guyanese holders, he said that while some licences holders may have hired Chinese contractors or workers, the ownership remains local.
