The fire at Lot 151 Queenstown, Skeldon, was caused by an overheated lithium battery, which exploded, Divisional Fire Chief, Clive McDonald confirmed on Thursday

Lithium batteries are used on electric bikes and vehicles, as well as cellphones and gadgets.

The Fire Chief explained that the rechargeable battery was plugged in for a long period resulting in a process known as thermal runway [a rapid, uncontrollable increase in temperature which causes a fire or explosion and is particularly prevalent in lithium-ion batteries] and it exploded.
